Weekly Nickel: Top 5 bloodiest MMA fights

I was watching some past fights, brushing up on my MMA knowledge, and I came across Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga. Quite the matchup. A young up-and-comer versus a legend for the heavyweight championship belt. Most all people had Gonzaga favored, but Randy came out and dominated that fight and made Gabriel bleed all over the canvas. That fight got me thinking, which fights are the bloodiest in MMA history? After careful consideration I broke it down to my top five, with an honorable mention of course.

Honorable Mention: Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith

As with any Scott Smith fight, this was a war. And it was actually a rematch, the first one being riddled with eye pokes ending in a No Contest. Also, like the first fight, this one was high energy and heavy on the striking. If you get bored watching a Scott Smith fight then you don’t like fighting, plain and simple. This fight went back and forth. Knees, head kicks, punches. You name it, this fight had it. Smith finally opened up Lawler’s head with some well placed elbows, only to set off a ticking time bomb. Robbie seemed energized by the sight of his own blood. Watch and see…
