Roger Federer wins again — oh wait, he lost? WTF?
Roger Federer, the No. 1 seed, was defeated by No. 5 Robin Soderling in the quarterfinals of the French Open, and it was quite the upset.
The 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 Soderling win put an end to Federer’s streak of 23 consecutive major semifinals, but Soderling has played the spoiler before. Last year, Soderling beat four-time French Open champ Rafael Nadal, which helped Federer win his first title at Roland Garros.
“I didn’t think I played a bad match,” said Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam title winner. “He came up with some great tennis. It’s much easier to digest this way.”
The stunning part is that Federer beat Soderling 12 straight matches, including a victory in straight sets in last year’s championship at the French Open.
“I love playing on this court. I have been here for two weeks and have been playing better and better with each match,” said Soderling. “Today I played really well. It can’t get much better than this to beat the world number one on this court.”
It never has been Federer’s strongest event because of the clay, but it’s still a great win for an up-and-coming player.
“The biggest improvement on the men’s tour in the last two years is Robin Soderling’s head,” said three-time French Open champion Mats Wilander, a fellow Swede. “He believes in himself because he has worked harder than probably anyone to get to where he is.”
And Soderling had the right attitude after the win, explaining he still has more to do. Here’s hoping he wins it all. It’s always nice for a new face to challenge the perennial winners. And he has a good shot. After all, he did beat Nadal last year.
“This is a big win, but it’s not the final,” Soderling said. “I don’t want to celebrate too much. I want to focus on the next game.”
