A Trip To The Dallas Cowboys’ Training Camp

As if you guys didn’t know, the NFL football season is upon us. I was lucky enough, or rather, just bored enough to attend the 3:00pm session of the Dallas Cowboys training camp on Sunday. Don’t get me wrong, I was excited, as I’m always excited to go to my favorite team’s practice every year. That’s until I get there. Then I wonder why I came. Sure, there’s fun and games to be had at every corner. I found out that DeMarcus Ware’s hand is twice the size of mine, and I even played a football tossing game. However, I literally wanted to leave five minutes after I sit down.

But then something comes over me. Something I believe we all catch when football season is near. It’s “The Fever.” You know what I’m talking about. “The Fever,” the one you can’t shake for 5 to 6 months. The one that when you finally get over it, it comes calling like a sexy ex-girlfriend who just broke up with her boyfriend and wants you to come over for “drinks.” And now you are right back into it, and you love it. At least, that’s how I feel about the Cowboys. Every year “she” promises me that this time will be different, this year we’ll go all the way. And every single year “she” leaves me after the holiday season.

Nevertheless, football season is here, and I took “my ex” on a date on Sunday afternoon. Everything was great. Thousands packed the Alamodome for this practice session. That’s right, practice. This “fever” we catch is so strong that we Americans spend our free time battling crowds, sweating under the Texas sun, and spending on ONE beer what we could spend on an entire CASE of beer at the store, to watch a practice session. Not a game, not a game. Practice. (Thanks A.I.) And it is worth every penny. That beer never tasted so good, and your team never looked so good. This is the year, you just know it.

When the practice was finally over, the superstars of the team grace us with their presence and sign sports memorabilia in droves. Fans tussle and maneuver for position just to get some ink on their shirt or a glimpse of their hero. I even heard one woman yell, “I want your baby, Miles!” She has a real bad case of “The Fever.” I don’t know about having anyone’s baby, but “my girl” looked better than ever. Rookie Wide Receiver Dez Bryant was making acrobatic catches all over the field, while the aforementioned Miles Austin was showcasing his blazing speed. Again, all reaffirming my renewed faith that this year will be our year.

With the lights going down and the security guards running everyone out, it was time to say goodbye to this year’s Training Camp experience. And while I could come back for the next two weeks, I won’t. All I needed was one trip, one “kiss” from “my girl,” to believe every word she said. The Dallas Cowboys are going to win the Super Bowl this year, I just know it. That is, until “my girl” does what she always does, and let’s me down. I will vow never to attend one of these things again, never to get catch “The Fever” again. And for a few months I’ll be fine.

But then she’ll call…
