MMA Quick Hits 6/3/11: Anthony Pettis will wait for title shot, Georges St-Pierre excited to fight Nick Diaz

Anthony Pettis told MMAWeekly.com that he doesn’t mind waiting for his UFC title shot. “I don’t mind; tell Dana not to feel bad. I don’t really care. I’ll take another fight, I’ll take two fights if I have to, I really don’t mind. For me, it’s just I’m in the UFC, I’m young, and I’ve got a lot of talent so the sky is the limit. I’m going to get my title shot whether it’s this year or next year. I’m going to earn it…I’m like the most popular UFC fighter that ain’t fought in the UFC yet. I think for sure [there are] some people envious and jealous of my position, but I worked to get where I’m at. I paid a lot of dues in this sport, and it shows in the fights…If people don’t believe now, give me time. I had to make my WEC debut and look where I got in two years. I’m making my UFC debut, give me some time, and I guarantee I’m going to turn all the people who don’t believe into believers.” That “envious” shot was directed at Gray Maynard, you can be sure. Yes, Pettis is still young, but I think he’s getting a raw deal by waiting for a shot. He should’ve been next after the Maynard/Edgar draw.

In an interview with the Canadian Press, Georges St-Pierre said he was excited to take on a fighter who has talked a lot about him in the past. “I’m excited. Because it’s been a long time he’s been talking about me, saying like he’s the best, he was saying I was avoiding him and stuff. But I never avoid anybody. Now it’s time to walk the walk. It’s going to be a good fight.” Bad news for Nick Diaz. GSP sounds very motivated for this fight. Even though Diaz is a pretty good fighter, no way he walks away with this belt. You know who I’ll be rooting for.

Jon Jones told MMAJunkie.com that he’ll be fighting Quinton Jackson soon. “I’ll be fighting Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson next. I’m not allowed to discuss the date because I didn’t sign a contract, but yeah, it will be very soon.” I guess Jackson’s hand injury wasn’t severe enough to keep him out of the fight. Should be a good fight.

Cub Swanson revealed on his Twitter account that he’ll once again have to withdraw from a fight with Erik Koch due to a facial fracture in training. Some fights just aren’t meant to happen it seems. I would like to watch it, but it seems to have a dark cloud over it.

UFC officials announced that a training injury has forced Anthony “Rumble” Johnson out of his headlining bout with Nate Marquardt at UFC on Versus 4, and that Rick Story is stepping up on short notice to take the fight. I feel Story’s unlikely run is at an end. I still say Alves won that fight, but Marquardt is definitely winning this one.
